Yay! So here we are, October 25, 2011. SOOO many thing have happened and it has been quite the semester already! I am taking six classes this semester! Here's a quick description of each:
Monday - MADT 204 - Media Arts and Digital Technologies - 204 is the first class of interactive objects/robotics/machinery. We learn how to make simple to complicated circuitry and the projects include sensors and timing, motors and mechanics, and Arduino. I still have to do a bit of editing on my video of the first project so stay tuned for that.
SOCS 200 - Visual Culture - This class is mostly about visual cultures and image analysis. We discuss different images and how images affect the art world, and the world in general today. This is a Liberal Studies class, so no artwork is created. Here's a link to the class blog for interested readers.
Tuesday - DRWG 214 - Studio and Research - here we are given artists to research then we're given topics to create art around - with the choice of working toward a body of work or an unrelated series of works. I have been focusing on a body of work involving origami - so I'm trying to use some method of origami for each work. I will post photos of my projects soon as I have completed three projects so far and am working on the fourth.
AHIS 317 - Art History - This is a design art history course I've decided to take in order to expand my art knowledge a bit more. And I have to say this class has definitely expanded my knowledge. Paired with readings and lectures each week we students have to find an image that corresponds with the readings and lecture and discuss it's history, it's maker, it's targeted audience and it's current and future designing effects. Wednesday - PRNT 212 - Silkscreen - A favorite class of mine! This class introduces paper silkscreening through three distinct projects. I never thought I'd like print but this is my 2nd class after I fell in love with Intaglio last winter semester. I'm hoping I can stay another year to get my printmaking bachelor of fine arts as well as the one in media arts and digital technologies I will complete at the end of next year. I'm also using this class (and Fridays) to create a body of work to sell at ACAD's Show and Sales. I will post images soon.
PPRL 200 - Professional Practices for Artists - This class has been the most informational. It's safe to say I've learned the most in this class and I have no idea why it is not required for MADT Majors, but it is required for all others. This class teaches you everything you need to know to make it in the art world - how to write CVs, artist statements, applications for grants, awards, bursaries, competitions, gallery exhibitions, how to budget, how to work in groups to open an artist run gallery, or your own store, or event... list goes on. Very cool class - extremely recommended.
Thursday - SOCS200 - on Mondays and Thursdays...
Rest of week off - to do homework. :D
I have also begun seeking out volunteer opportunities - and so far I have volunteered with QuickDraw and GIRAF at the Red and White Comic and Toy Expo at McMahon Stadium, and I will volunteer at GIRAF's events on the 3rd at the Glenbow Museum for David O'Reilly's Artist Talk and Screening and I will help set up everything for the Log Driver's Plaid Party which is screening videos on the side of the Jubilee and then assist in the first shift later that evening. AND I have also begun volunteering for ACAD's events - the first being their open house just last weekend - 21st & 22nd - and I hope to be able to get more involved through the MNG and ACADSA.
